IBS and RIKEN Sign MOU for Joint Research in Nuclear Physics
In December 2024, the Institute for Basic Science (IBS) and Japan’s RIKEN signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to strengthen collaboration in the field of nuclear physics. The agreement aims to establish a long-term cooperative framework through the Top-Tier Premier International Research Consortium (TOPTIER).
The collaboration will leverage the advanced rare isotope beam facilities of both institutions—RAON in Korea and RIBF in Japan—facilitating joint experiments, data sharing, and researcher exchange.
To mark the beginning of this initiative, the Korea–Japan Symposium on the TOPTIER Platform in Extreme Rare Isotope Science was held at Seoul National University from December 15 to 17, 2024. The symposium brought together researchers from major Korean and Japanese institutions including:
Korea: IBS, Seoul National University, Sungkyunkwan University, Kyung Hee University, Yonsei University, and others
Japan: RIKEN, Tohoku University, Tokyo Institute of Technology, and more
This partnership represents a significant step forward in international collaboration in nuclear science and is expected to foster deeper cooperation across Asia and beyond.
